Payman Maadi was born in 1972 in New York City to an Iranian couple. His family moved back to Iran when he was 5 years old. After graduating in Metallurgical Engineering from Karaj Azad University, Maadi’s acting career began in Asghar Farhadi's film About Elly (2009). Two years later, he received the Silver Bear Award for Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival for his performance as Nader in Farhadi's A Separation (2011), which won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Maadi has starred alongside Kristen Stewart in Camp X-ray, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and will be seen opposite Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen in the independent film The Last Knights. Recently, he filmed a starring role in the HBO series Criminal Justice, written and directed by Steve Zaillian. Aside from his critically acclaimed performances, Maadi is also a writer with several credits to his name.
