 ial preview screening of Pearls on the Ocean Floor, a new documentary 
 (in progress) by Robert Adanto, about the lives and work of contempora
 ry Iranian women artists around the world. The segment being presented
  includes interviews with Afshan Ketabchi, Sara Rahbar, Leila Pazooki,
  Parastou Forouhar, Shirin Neshat, Negar Ahkami and Pooneh Maghazehe. 
 The director will be present for question &amp; answer after the film.
  This program is presented in tandem with the current exhibition Trace
 s of Being: Iran in the Passage of Memories.\n\nThe screening will sta
 rt at 3 pm on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at Downtown Independent Cinema
 , just over a block away from the gallery, followed by a reception at 
 Morono Kiang Gallery.\n\nAbout Pearls on the Ocean Floor:\n“Facing i
 ssues of identity, gender, and social restrictions, the female artists
  in Pearls on the Ocean Floor speak with a compelling quiet reserve an
 d a striking boldness. Their work reveals encounters between religion 
 and secular modernity, change and tradition, contemporary life and his
 tory. These brave women seem to know now more than ever that their voi
 ce must be heard and their people understood. Through their words and 
 their art, the real Iran will be discovered and this important histori
 cal moment will be documented.”\n\nRobert Adanto is an independent d
 ocumentary filmmaker. His debut feature-length documentary, The Rising
  Tide, premiered at the United Kingdom's China Now! Festival and has b
 een screening throughout U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia.\n\n
